About Us Shared Media Group |
Shared Media GroupThe Shared Media Group creates and demonstrates technologies that allow end users and customers to share various kinds of information. This information may be either digital electronic content such as video and audio, or it might be something as prosaic as a simple exchange of paper business cards. These communications can be either structured or unstructured, and in fact often combine elements of both. For example, a standard e-mail message might include a personal note (unstructured) along with a purchase order (structured), sent as a single message using a generic tool. The group explores this interaction between unstructured communication and structured communication.
In addition, the group investigates the relationship between these media and paper based media. It is quite easy to underestimate the impact of paper, which affects how we think about all types of media. We work to reproduce critical properties of paper in digital multimedia communication. The Shared Media Group creates systems which span a cross-section of computer technologies. The group creates network protocols and infrastructure, creates servers that use those protocols to store and forward information, and creates client applications which allows those servers to be accessed and utilized. Some of these clients have sophisticated user interfaces, and others are server utilities which never interact directly with an end user.
